To be Free.

What does freedom mean to you?

Blue Bells

I am extremely grateful for my freedom. It is hard to imagine a place, where I cannot wear what I want, I can’t ask questions, I can’t eat what I want, I can’t go where I want.

Restrictive measures in society can be legal, social, economic, cultural and emotional. These make life difficult to endure. Sometimes we make our own barriers.

If I do something wrong I feel much too guilty. Today I went for a group gym class, thoroughly enjoyed it and left with my husband. After ten minutes I realised that I had not checked in at the self check in kiosk. I was overwhelmed with a sense of guilt and also the fact that I would have to pay a fee of 50 pence for my own fault of not remembering.

We drove back as I felt awful about the situation. Such a minor thing but I was unable to forgive myself. Upon reaching the gym I went to the reception with the fifty pence punishment and was told that the instructor had checked me in. The relief was insurmountable. I have created this great big barrier of guilt which completely takes over my freedom.

I hope this explains what freedom means for me. I do not take it for granted. Everyday I feel I have to earn it and be grateful for my world that we live in. I do feel sorry for some areas where people don’t have the same freedom. Freedom and happiness go hand in hand. Be happy, be free.

  1. I enjoyed reading this. I work with juvenile offenders who are incarcerated onsite but with a virtual educational program. It is truly eye opening. I observe that some will learn and move forward and some will not. Freedom is a gift and an intelligence of sorts.
