How do you want to retire?

Need some self introspection before I know how I want to retire. Not doing my usual job as a GP is something I cannot fathom. I love my work and my team. I would not know what to do with myself if I was not working.
Whatever it be, I will have to retire. I want to travel a bit. I want to write. I would like to live where my children will be.
I have always liked routine in my days so will need to bring in cooking, cleaning and exercise in the mix to keep looking after myself.
I have never done a cruise and I think that will be a good way to travel later in life. I love rivers and bridges so I think I will volunteer for the river and canal trust.
Even thinking of another life is quite invigorating, retirement will need some planning and I am happy I have thought about it today.
If you are retired please tell me how you use the time for yourself.

I’m unofficially retired. I do nothing most days… but that’s health related. On good days, I take classes, go whale watching, play with my cats, go to shows…

When you have retired you can take time to live your life at a reasonable pace. When I had a career work came first, I was always rushing around, doing everything at pace…but I simply didn’t recognise this until I was able to look back upon my working life from the green fields of retirement! You are right about routines, which give structure to your daily existence…I felt a bit lost until my new routines had bedded in. And your new routines will have extra time built into them, as the demands work currently places on your daily life will all be in the past. When the time comes, enjoy!

Retirement was the best career decision I ever made. I went from a workaholic to a professional slacker and I love it still have 10 years. I am doing just what I planned on doing in retirement. Each day is mine to do what I want, a lot or little. Freedom of time is the best thing yet.
